In Singapore they are trying to help eradicate infectious diseases spread by mosquitoes. What kinds of questions does this raise after you watch the video?

Our first SciFri today is inspired by someone who wanted to learn more about hand sanitizer.
Our second SciFri is inspired by events in New Zealand this past week. Tourists were walking around on an island with an active volcano off the coast of New Zealand. Without much warning, the volcano erupted, causing multiple deaths and many injuries.

Also, Greta Thunberg, who was on a SciFri video of ours a few weeks ago, was just named Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" for her work inspiring conversation and action regarding climate change. She is the youngest person to be given this honor.

One SciFri video is about some humanoid mini robots battling it out at a competition! The engineering and design is so cool! The other SciFri is a comparison video of planets to different stars and then continues into the galaxy and beyond!

How cool is the show How It's Made?  I love it!

In this video you can learn about how silk is made. I find this fascinating....and a little weird. I can't believe that 5000 years ago someone thought to uncoil a cocoon and turn the resulting thread into fabric!

We had a SciFri last week about how to make a cloud in your mouth! Then, this week we saw a video about an octopus using problem solving skills to get a fish. Super interesting!

Today's SciThur is about climate change and is a TED talk from Greta Thunberg, who is a Swedish 16-year old who has gained international notoriety in her activism about climate change. What a cool thing that a young person has been able to get so many people to hear her about something so important!

Thanks to Dylan D. for suggesting this! He found the video about the guy who created a substance that absorbs more light than Vantablack, which is the most light-absorbing material. If you don't know what Vantablack is, check out the other video first!

We've had some interesting SciFri videos in the past few weeks. Here are some of them - thanks for the recommendations!
Savannah C. suggested this video about suction cups in a vacuum chamber. Do you think they'll stick without air?
Mav B. suggested this video about what would happen to you in the vacuum of space. Would you survive long? What would happen?
Alishan M. shared how worms can survive in the human body...and even how they might serve humans positively!
Heather T. suggested a video about sugar and its effects on your body. What does the research say?

Today's SciFri was about the opiod epidemic, which, unfortunately, has hit hard in Ohio. It's really important to be aware of this and make healthy choices for yourself!

Thanks to Joel W. for suggesting this awesome video!

How strong is oobleck? You know that fun corn starch and water combo that sometimes feels like a liquid and sometimes feels like a solid? They explore how strong it is in this video with chainsaws, bb guns, and even a golf ball cannon launcher! This channel, The Backyard Scientist, has some really interesting stuff.
As a bonus, here is the other video they made together, too! How would you survive better if a grenade exploded?...on land or in the water?

Todday's SciFri will help us understand just how insane atoms are! It's kind of wild to imagine how small they are and the fact that they are mostly empty space.

So this past week I put a plasma ball in the room for students to check out and play with but I figured that we might not really know a lot about plasma, despite the fact that it's the most prevalent type of matter in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE! Our SciFri video tells us a little more about plasma.
Bonus! Here's a video of the demo we did with a fluorescent bulb  in class with the plasma lamp. No footage of us in class but here's someone else doing what we did!

Did you know that we have a black hole at the center of our galaxy? Are you scared now??? Well, don't be! Our SciFri video goes over the black hole in the middle of the Milky Way galaxy and the science of why we don't really need to be worried!

Can you fold a paper more than 7 times? The myth is that you cannot fold something more than 7 times, but Mythbusters took that challenge on and attempted to fold a football-sized piece of paper more than 7 times!
